Wondering where to see the northern lights in Lapland? At North Wind Lapland, we take you aurora hunting around Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo, inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park — on snowshoes, by snowmobile, by sled or by car. Our guides live here and know the spots that stay dark.
The question isn’t only when, but where to stand. An aurora can be spectacular and still be hidden behind a treeline or washed out by village lights. We take groups to three kinds of place, chosen each evening based on wind, cloud and solar activity:
The frozen mires of Lainio. Wide, flat open ground — not a tree, not a light. A clear 360° view. When the aurora crosses the whole sky, this is where you see all of it.
A private wilderness cabin near Ylläsjärvi. A fire, shelter, hot coffee, and the sky above. Best in deep cold or with children — you can wait for hours without getting cold.
A frozen lake at Luosu. The open horizon of a lake, fells behind, snow reflecting the light.
Ylläsjärvi has a few hundred residents and the national park starts at the edge of the village. Unlike the bigger resorts, you don’t need to drive an hour to find the dark.
We don’t promise auroras — nobody can. We put you in the best conditions to see them, and if the sky clears, we know where to go.
The aurora season in Ylläs runs from September to April — you need a dark night and a clear sky.
Our guided tours run from November to April, once the snow has settled and the nights are long. In September and October the auroras are there, but we don’t run excursions: if you’re here then, you can watch for them yourself.
Either way, we can tell you when. Our Ylläs northern lights alert is free — you get an email whenever the viewing probability goes above 50%, calculated on actual conditions at Ylläs, not a regional average.
