What to Wear in Lapland in Winter

Winter in Finnish Lapland is pure magic — snow-draped collines, frozen rivers, and skies that come alive with the Northern Lights. But temperatures here regularly dip well below freezing, and staying warm is what turns an adventure into a comfortable one. The good news? Dressing for the Arctic isn’t complicated once you understand one simple principle.

Layers Are the Key

Layering is the golden rule for staying warm in our Arctic conditions. Instead of one thick jacket, you build up several thinner layers that trap warm air, wick away moisture, and let you adjust as you move between the cold outdoors and cosy cabins.

Here’s how to dress before you head out:

  • Thermal underwear and long johns — your first layer, worn right against the skin to keep the warmth in. Best in merino wool. Do not wear cotton as it traps moisture in its fibers!
  • A long-sleeve top — light and breathable over your base layer.
  • A fleece — your cosy mid-layer for insulation.
  • Woolen socks — wool stays warm even when your feet get a little damp.
  • A woolen hat — you lose a lot of heat through your head, so keep it covered.

Dress up in these, and we’ll get you all the outside layers you need to stay warm!

What We Provide When You Book With Us

When you book an experience with North Wind Lapland, you don’t need to buy expensive Arctic outerwear you’ll wear once. We’ve got you covered — literally.

Winter Vest and Pants for Adults

For adults, we use high-quality outdoor winder pants and vests, along with mittens, winter boots and woolen socks. Everything you need for the outer shell of your layering system, ready and waiting when you arrive.

Winter Overalls for Children

For children, we prefer high-quality overalls — they’re easier and faster to put on, which is a real bonus when you want to dress up children quickly! We also include woolen socks, winter boots and mittens, so the whole family is ready for the snow in minutes.
